How do you go on living when your whole life has been one big lie?

Once, a long time ago, Grace Benedict had friends. Good friends. In college she and her roommates Tess, Lovey, and Liz, had been inseparable. And even though life has taken them in different directions, they’ve stayed in touch. For thirty years they’ve kept a circle journal, sharing with one another the ups and downs of their lives, their celebrations and victories, their struggles and heartaches.

Grace’s life hasn’t been easy. And now, as she faces a diagnosis of cancer that shakes her to the core, she needs her friends more than ever.

There’s just one problem. Grace has been lying to them. For thirty years, she’s been fabricating a life, creating a fiction of the way she wished things would be. Love, success, family, fulfillment—she’s had it all. In her imagination, anyway.

If she’s ever going to reclaim those friendships, she needs to tell the truth. About herself, about her needs, about the sadness and unfulfilled longing that has marked her life. She’s running out of time.

Telling the truth just might change everything. But can she find the courage? And more importantly, can she unravel her true self from the tangled web of deception that has held her captive?

Circle of Grace eBook Penelope J Stokes

I've always liked Ms. Stokes' writing. I read several of her books a few years ago and searched her out recently to see if she had written anything new. I came across this book and was excited to see that much of it was set in an area near and dear to my heart, Asheville. I love when a book is descriptive about an area I know well and this book did not disappoint in that regard. The writing was exemplary and the book kept my interest from beginning to end. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the theological missteps that were clearly purposeful. The idea that all the characters would eventually meet again, that there isn't just one path to eternity, that in spite of their agnosticism, atheism and neutral, lukewarm faith they would all be granted an eternity together is flawed and misleading. I appreciated her explanation that faith isn't wrapped up in the liturgy and rules of the institution called church, but she swayed too far off the path by saying that there were multiple ways to meet the Creator. Accepting, believing and confessing that Jesus Christ is Lord is the only way to spend eternity in Heaven with Him. To say anything less is dangerous and downright harmful to readers. I hope that Ms. Stokes comes to a better understanding of God's purpose in her life before it is too late.

Circle of Grace eBook Penelope J Stokes Reviews

Good book. Enjoyed!
Having read all of Penelope Stokes' previous writings and proclaimed myself a fan, I find I must recend that status. While the story line wasn't all that bad, I was disappointed that some of Ms. Stokes' previous attention to the spiritual applications for her characters was missing. There were allusions, but no depth, no open statements of faith and/or guidance in that direction which I have found in her previous books and characters. I notice that she is no longer publishing w/ the publisher of her first books - could there be an element of compromise here? I am about to read her recently released novel and hope to find better fare and a re-focusing which I missed in Circle of Grace.
I enjoyed this book
This book was recommended by a friend and I loved it! I may not read anything else by this author (I have way too many books to read for the rest of my life!) but I'm glad I did take the time to read this one (mine was on ).
I bought this book because the author is a native Mississippian. ("Yes, we can read, some of us can even write.") Had I known it might be classified as a "Christian" work, I probably would not have selected it at all. It's not that I have anything again that genre, but personally, if I want Christian writing, I will select C.S. Lewis. I want my fiction to be well written, cleverly plotted, and entertaining, not theological.

Stokes writes beautifully reflecting her knowledge of literature and her ability to put together great scenes and create believable characters. She captures that remarkable slice of life, friendship among women, especially strong among Southern women. Not everyone understands such relationships, but they should have a better idea after reading this book.

A Circle of Grace is good reading anytime, but especially for these days of summer when there is perhaps more time to digest and appreciate a totally absorbing and remorable novel. Brava, Penelope, you do Mississippi proud.
This story of old friends that keep up with each other by passing around a journal seems very unrealistic to me. Apparently they never talked, or got together again over the years. I don't think good friends do that! I won't give it all away, but there are several more things that make the book so far-fetched that it's not enjoyable. Did not enjoy it.
I loved "Circle of Grace" from start to finish, and though parts of it were predictable, I love the way Stokes develops her characters. They're easy to understand, maybe because we're like them or know people like them. I also like the "threads" of spirituality she adds to her books without making them at all "sappy". Whenever I read one of her books, it's usually within a few days, because she captures my interest from page 1.
